Finite element analysis (FEA) is a powerful tool for determining stress concentration points and other material characteristics of a component. FEA is used to investigate loads, stress concentrations, frequency characteristics, buckling tendencies, and deformations in weldments, castings and other parts under load.
Design Process:
- Perform a structural analysis of the component to determine loading stresses
- Use FEA to model variations in stress concentrations
- Recommend design improvement

As part of a new vehicle design, the steering system was evaluated. FEA was used for stress analysis on the steering arm.

FEA was done on part of a large food processing machine used to flatten grain. The machine includes two rollers and a tensioner mechanism that holds rollers together. Solid Works® three-dimensional modeling program and COSMOS™ software for FEA was used to analyze stresses on the roll tensioner bracket.
